The second San Quentin car caravan to demand that the State of California protect prisoners from the deadly COVID-19 virus will take place on Saturday, June 20th. Cars will assemble at the Larkspur Ferry Terminal parking lot at 10AM. The caravan will begin at 11AM, driving up Sir Francis Drake Blvd. to the West Gate of San Quentin State Prison.
Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) are administering a new death penalty by failing to protect prisoners from this deadly virus. At Chuckawalla Valley State Prison, 993 prisoners - almost half the population - have now tested positive. This is a catastrophe. Prisoners - including elderly and immunocompromised prisoners - are locked in place, unable to social distance and defenseless against the novel coronavirus.
Despite a massive outbreak at the California Institute for Men (CIM) in Chino, CDCR transferred 121 men from CIM to San Quentin, without testing them. As of June 16, 2020, 33 prisoners are reported to have the coronavirus, and the number is certain to explode. Kevin Cooper, an innocent prisoner on San Quentin's Death Row who has served 35 years, wrote: “being on death row with this COVID-19 pandemic raging is like having another death sentence.”
It is no accident that the U.S., the richest country in the world, has both the highest rate of imprisonment and the most killed by this deadly virus. Such is the shameful reality of capitalist America whose attention is focused on a rising stock market and not the working victims of the coronavirus pandemic. The ongoing protests against police brutality across the nation and the ongoing demonstrations to release people from prisons, jails and ICE detention centers - including political prisoners such as Mumia Abu-Jamal, Leonard Peltier and Chip Fitzgerald, imprisoned for decades for fighting the racist police, courts and prisons - are the same fight. Mass incarceration and police brutality are twin arms of the repressive apparatus the state wields against working people to uphold capitalism.
“No State Execution by COVID-19” is the slogan for this protest initiated by the Labor Action Committee to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal. Other participating Bay Area organizations include the Party of Socialism and Liberation, Freedom Socialist Party, CODEPINK, Love Not Blood Foundation, Oscar Grant Committee, California Prison Focus, Communist Workers League (Bay Area), the People's Alliance, Workers World Party (Bay Area), Families United to End LWOP, the Anti Police-Terror Project, and others.
Signs displayed on the vehicles will make demands to address the prison crisis including: Release all prisoners over 60 and those with health conditions that make them especially vulnerable to the coronavirus; release of all prisoners not convicted of a violent crime; release of all prisoners whose sentences are almost over.
Participants in the caravan will exercise their First Amendment right to free speech while observing CDC protections, including physical distancing of the participants.

In solidarity, Nube
